Discover | A Copper Kettle

Today proves the old English proverb, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb," to be entirely accurate. For a moment, I thought it was time to wear flats again. To don skirts without stockings and forgo boots. But not so. On this particular Monday, I'm wrapped in a chunky cable-knit sweater that makes me feel utterly British as I watch the blustery wind whip snow in artful swirls across our yard. There is nothing left to do but cozy up under a blanket and wait out this month.

On a blustery day like this, we can't help but pine for a mug of something hot.
Tea. Coffee. Cocoa.

Husband and I were given a lovely enamel tea kettle as a wedding gift, but he hates it because the kettle lacks a whistle and we always forget that it is on the stove until we begin to smell smoke. Since moving out of our old apartment, I've pulled out my trusty electric tea kettle from college and we've taken to boiling our tea water in this far less romantic way. Lately, however, I've been dreaming of bright copper kettles (in addition to warm woolen mittens and brown paper packages, of course). Something both stunningly beautiful and ultimately practically with a proper whistle and an elegantly sturdy handle. This photo is of a vintage beauty on etsy. But the Simplex Copper Kettle from Sur La Table is also quite nice.

What do you think? Do you have an electric or a proper stove-top kettle?

  1. It's beautiful. While I love the look of a "proper" tea kettle, I must admit that since coming to depend on an electric kettle when I lived in the U.K., I don't think I could ever go back. It is so much faster! (At least faster than our propane stove.) I even heat up water in it to use in cooking pasta, etc. because it's faster than getting the water to boil on the stove. Alas, practicality wins over aesthetics in this instance...

But I'd be tempted to get a copper kettle just for looks. :) We recently acquired some gorgeous copper measuring cups and I love them.

    1. Its true--the electric kettle heats water just so quickly! Its terribly convenient. :) Considering that copper kettles are a little more on the pricey side of things, I think, for now, I shall admire them from afar.

  2. The enamel teapot would make a lovey "pot" for one of your houseplants. I like the copper one!
