Things, the importance if which, cannot be overstated:

  • perennials that bud, then bloom, without so much a whisper of coaxing from me.
  • clean sheets on a freshly made bed.
  • when a man opens the car door for a woman before she climbs in (or out).
  • men in slim-fitting suits (particularly my man).
  • the scent of charcoal and matches drifting through the evening air.
  • bubbling champagne.
  • lattes in the afternoon (full fat and without restraint).
  • an exceptionally well-written first line of a book; the kind that you stop and read twice because it is that wonderful.
  • an unexpected smile from a stranger.
  • thunderstorms, anywhere.
